Wrist Broken Tragically

Friday April 24, 2015 |

On August 16th 2014 I suffered a basketball injury to my right wrist. I broke the connecting bone from my forearm to my wrist. I’m now 34 and have been playing basketball as a hobby for 22 years.

I could not believe that the sport I loved was betraying me and causing me to possibly make me retire both my hobby basketball and my passion art making. A week after the injury I had surgery to repair the broken bones. I seriously thought I would never be able to draw or paint again if I did I thought I would need to do it left-handed. 🙁

8 screws and a plate were attached to my wrist bones. 3and a half hour surgery went well. See x-ray

3 days after surgery I had to try and draw. I drew this face. As you can see it’s incredibly rough but the feeling captured is true.

I was not able to move much of my wrist it was basically moving my arm to draw and four fingers and barely my thumb. It was painful. 2 weeks later I tried again and now i had good movement in my thumb and fingers but minimal wrist movement. Still felt pain to move my wrist as I drew and worked on my therapy exercises.

2nd Drawing 2 weeks after surgery. The drawing is rough but it does show promise of my return to form.

The next day I drew again, this time using the rough lines to help the drawing express what a bad situation I was in. I couldn’t help feel like I was stuck in this mess and the past and future felt far away. see what I mean below.

Finally after doing therapy for 4 weeks my wrist movement was on its way back although not 100% more like 65% I drew again and here is the latest drawing below.
I finally drew something I could be proud of. I was in pain but I saw a real possible come back, where just 10 days before I was not too sure about it. I am eternally grateful for my health. I now have an enormous sense of gratitude towards treating your body with the most respect and I’m looking forward towards living life with a little more care than before and to always cherish my gifts God has given me.
I still can’t lift much of anything with my right hand or play sports or give a high five. But I can draw and I really don’t know what I would do without that in my life. I can draw…
Thank you for all the kind words from all of you from facebook and instagram!
